It's just too costly to always focus on new customer acquisition without retaining the former ones. Whether you have been selling for 20 years or 2 months, Rick’s principle and approach are helpful. I Loved his reminder on CREDABILIY. A must read for as a refresher or to learn the keys to selling for the first time.
The Five Abilities touches on something that I find more and more within my own business - people do business with people they like.

Buying the book gives you access to a simple, easy-to-learn framework that can apply to all sales situations, no matter the complexity. It's a simple AND EFFECTIVE way to implement a winning sales strategy and to help develop a sales culture when customer service is again the focus.

Since learning these abilities I have been able to communicate better and close FAR MORE OFTEN. Don't know what I did without this!
Everyone, whether they realize it or not, is in sales. From working within a company, to convincing your kids to take some particular action, having influence with others is necessary. Wong has created an actual system for tracking where you are in the sales process and calls it The Five Abilities. Never again will you find yourself saying, "Oh no. What do I do now?" There is a clear road map in place to help guide you along to winning lifelong customers.
Rick and I worked together a few years back and he provided a review copy for me. First off, the author really knows his stuff. He has managed negotiations and complex sales with large organizations and high level executives where the stakes are high, the memories long and the egos on both sides of the table often out-sized. His book is chalk full of terrific anecdotes from the power of cold calls and selling checks to small banks in rural Montana to the importance of interpersonal insights recognizing most people "make business decisions for personal reasons" whether it is negotiating a high stakes deal with Boeing or navigating the complex culture issues of selling the concept of Intellectual Property to Asian hardware partners. He weaves these anecdotes together in 10 easy to follow chapters punctuating each "ability" ("visability", "credability", viability, etc) with a well-organized sales check list and list of what to do's and what not to do's. The total read time is less than 2.5 hours - I was able to get thru it on a flight from LAX to SEA - and well worth the investment of time. If you are an experienced selling pro or a business leader looking to get your mind wrapped around advanced selling concepts in an accessible way, this is a great book to help you learn some powerful and intuitive concepts.
Winning lifelong customers is what it is all about. Delighting your customers, learning how to talk to them and understand their needs - not just sell to them, this is what Rick does a masterful job doing. His model for understanding, engaging and selling the right way to potential and existing customers is what every business leader must understand to turn their existing customers into lifelong customers. Rick isn't new at this - he has lived this and proven this in his career and now you can learn these proven techniques. This is a great read.

The Five Abilities simplifies sales and provides great direction with predictable impact. Its stories make it a read once, remember and realize the benefit type of book. It creates value for successful experienced sales people as well as those just getting started. It helps increase self awareness and in doing so makes it easy to put its message into your own experience. Obviously I like this book, what it offers and how easy it was for me to learn from.
