You would always recognise your own child...wouldn't you? Heidi and Jason aren't like other couples. Six years ago, Heidi's daughter was murdered. A year later, Jason's son Barney disappeared. Their shared loss brought them together. By chance, Heidi meets a boy she's certain is her husband's long-missing son - but Jason is equally convinced it's not him. Is Heidi mad? Or is Jason hiding something? And can their fragile marriage survive Heidi's search for the truth?

My Husband Son (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah O'Connor Zara Ramm Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books

The heroine's behaviour is, at times, a little disconcerting and I'm not sure that the ending is totally plausible. It's a fairly quick read though and OK to fill the time between outstanding books.

My Husband Son (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah O'Connor Zara Ramm Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books Reviews

We learn early on that Heidi lost her daughter but O’Connor does a good job at eking out the detail. There’s no great reveal, but it means we don’t dwell on the death… and remain a tad suspicious of Heidi.

Heidi fully supports Jason in his ongoing search for his son, however it’s taking its toll as false sighting after false sighting results in him becoming disenfranchised and fragile.

Heidi is sure the boy she sees is Barney, so she can’t understand Jason’s certainty that it isn’t, or his reticence to even look into the boy’s history.

We learn more about Barney’s disappearance – the police’s initial suspicion of Jason and his former wife – and how it destroyed their relationship; and we start to see his once supportive and understanding relationship with Heidi crumble under the pressure.

I enjoyed the first half of this book, but then Heidi’s behaviour became increasingly erratic and unrealistic. I thought the author was prepping us for her to seriously go off the rails…. and she did. Kinda. But not in the way I was expecting.

Having said that O’Connor doesn’t go with cookie-cutter characters who are all good / all bad. We’re privy to their shades of grey being revealed as we learn more about them and the loss of their children.

There’s a twist of sorts in the end, but I found myself a little dissatisfied at the conclusion. I didn’t expect a happy ending, but wasn’t entirely convinced of its feasibility… but that’s just me and my need for closure. For the most part this was a tense and well-paced tale of suspense.

3.5 stars
Heidi and Jason are a couple brought together by their shared experience of losing a child. Heidi's daughter was kidnapped and killed while Jason's son went missing and was never seen again. His life is consumed by finding Barney and the fact that Heidi understands his grief more than most people brings them together.

This book has a really interesting premise, Heidi believes that she's found Barney but Jason is convinced that she is wrong, but Heidi just cannot let it go. As the reader you're never quite sure whether Heidi is right or not, everything seems to be suggesting that he is not Barney, but could she be right?

I found Heidi to be really unlikeable. As a parent I can't help but feel compassion towards her for the loss of her daughter, but she makes some really really strange decisions that I just struggled to make sense of. I spent large portions of the book convinced that she was totally crazy, however I couldn't shake the nagging doubt that maybe she wasn't.

Jason meanwhile is a bit of a non event. He is clearly being eaten up by the loss of Barney, the not knowing what happened to him, and he isn't dealing at all well with it. Although who can blame him?!

I found My Husband's Son really easy to read, the author writes well and keeps the intrigue going throughout the book. The ending was nothing that I had imagined at any point while reading. It totally threw me, and confused me, and then once the shock had worn off it made me think.

I received a copy of My Husband's Son via Netgalley from the publishers in return for an honest review.
Not the best
I found this book tedious so about a third of the way through I jumped to the last chapter to see what happened.
GREAT PRODUCT SUPER FAST DELIVERY
Excellent, did miss most of my nights sleep as couldn't put it down until finished.
I really wanted to like the book but it's too draggy! The author went on and on and on about Heidi's clumsiness, her indecisiveness and her dead daughter's compass! There's no real substance except to keep repeating the same old Tommy, Barney/Mikey, Keith - and what happened to the reporter? What's his role in the whole book? I don't think very much of this book - sorry.
The heroine's behaviour is, at times, a little disconcerting and I'm not sure that the ending is totally plausible. It's a fairly quick read though and OK to fill the time between outstanding books.
