A serious, yet entertaining, look at the impediments in current thought which prevent certain forms of understanding between people. The title story was made into an award-winning film with script by Idries Shah, and chosen as an Outstanding Film of the Year.

The Dermis Probe comprises a collection of extracts from the written and oral tradition of Eastern thinkers.

In his preface, Shah notes, ‘In this book you can find illustrated some of the peculiarities of thought in the country which is today’s world, seen by its inhabitants and by those who call themselves visitors.’

Shah reinvents, the Elephant in The Dark as the title story of this, The Dermis Probe. Earlier, in an essay entitled –“THE TEACHING STORY: Observations on the Folklore of Our “Modern” Thought”, Shah notes various interpretations of the Elephant tale in terms of deficient explanation, philosophical teaching (man is blind), religious issue (man does not perceive the whole), etcetera.

These, says Shah, are as far as most people go and, “…Because none of these people can taste an inner content, none will even begin to imagine that one exists….” But, says Shah, the Sufis are not here to justify themselves.---“We are here to open the door of the mind to the possibility that stories might be technical documents. We are here to say that there is a method of making use of these documents…”

Those assertions as to taste, method, (even absence for justification) are not exactly open to verification by your average reviewer. Perhaps they outline some of the “impediments in current thought” referred to by the publisher and what “take people by surprise” (cover quote) in this book. The parts both better and reduce the whole.

And yet, if the Dermis Probe is read simply for entertainment, it is still full of memorable tales, titles and aphorisms. There are The Light Taker, The Yemenite Inquirer, Minai’s Journey, “The Steam of the Pot of Ikhtiari”. There are pointed sayings like “The thief who has not been caught is a king”, and unsettling Notes such as “butcher” is “One who dismembers bodies of irrelevant assumption….”. The proverbs enlarge the meaning of the tales, and the story Notes at the back are “of varying subject” and mark a different perspective.

In sum, we have the reissue of an excellent book of fables and tales, proverbs and analysis, a book that stands with any other collection of wit and wisdom. In addition, it seems,- beyond the obvious matters of morality, psychology, assumption, -- a book both hidden from the reader and a witness to what is missing.

The Dermis Probe edition by Idries Shah Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

Idries Shah’s terrific and thought-provoking book THE DERMIS PROBE seems to be written expressly for those who aren’t satisfied by the kind of superficial assessment that so often passes for serious thinking nowadays. It contains more than 100 short selections from Sufi lore, one of which – the title-piece – was made into an award-winning film. True to its title, the book can help the discerning reader penetrate beneath the surface and achieve a greater understanding. I recommend it to anyone who’s interested in achieving that goal.
"In this book you can find illustrated some of the peculiarities of thought in the country which is today's world, seen by its inhabitants and by those who call themselves visitors."

The quote above is from the introduction, "Goldfish," a true story about the irrationality, confusion, and lack of common sense in human thinking which surrounds us today. This story is immediately followed by the tale from which the book's title is derived, _The Dermis Probe_, an allegorical retelling in a slightly more modern context of a famous story about the serious problem with blindly accepting the word of today's experts lawyers, doctors, programmers, scientific "innovators" and other specialists as all-knowing wisdom. Due to such experts' intense focus on their one tiny sliver of knowledge, they tend to miss the big (and quite obvious) picture that would help solve a lot of our most pressing problems. Given today's confusing swarm of vast amounts of seemingly significant micro-knowledge signifying nothing which buzzes around in our brains obscuring our vision of what is actually there, the tale is quite apt. It made me wonder what it might be like if we could see certain things, like terrorism, climate change, the increasing divide between rich and poor, the coming of artificial intelligence, genetic cut-n-paste, and other sweeping world changes in their entire context, rather than as random bits and pieces each with it's own overly-simplistic "answer," widely separated by the experts' rigid academic and scientific field boundaries? What would actually be there in this amazing and terrifying big picture?

The way to wisdom--to seeing the big picture of reality, more fully--is a strange and unexpected one, this book's stories strongly suggest, a path made up of small realizations that, for most of us, can only occur if one's life and experiences are informed and illuminated by additional information that we are not, under ordinary circumstances, privy to. This book and others written by Idries Shah, provide valuable clues to the mystery that is existence and offers suggestions or sometimes mere hints about what one can do to learn more about what is really there and progress toward life's actual goals. One such story is "The Palace of the Man in Blue". If taken in the right way, it can transform one's life. But it is only one of many in this relatively small collection that can have that effect. Reality, many of us have begun to suspect is far, far more complex--there' much more going on--than even the most daring fields of science will admit to--or even look at. To approach it at all one must take in information, as one is able or prepared to face it, in little bits and pieces, until the penny drops (as a penny of knowledge dropping at the wrong time could have the effect of a white-hot anvil falling on your head). Does that sound like an exaggeration? Well, those of us who try to examine our lives and look at ourselves critically can see clearly that, as we age (and it is a horrible thing to observe), how closely we are coming to resemble those fine, smug, self-satisfied know-it-alls so blinkered by convention, so attached to culturally respected ideas such as the religion of "Science," that they send someone to jail for simply... looking at goldfish. Can you imagine what the lightning strike instant enlightenment would do to most self-deluded and arrogant individuals? They would see, in the stark brilliance of that light, the horror of what they have chosen, over the years, to become, and the truth would be devastating. I am grateful to stories like these which let in the sometimes-difficult truth slowly, at a pace I can handle.

For those, like me, who do not have an extensive book budget you can read the book for free online at idriesshahfoundation.org. Just search the site for "The Dermis Probe."
Pachy-DERM PROB-oscis is, of course, an elephant! But, when you take the scientific name apart and make it the title, THE DERMIS PROBE, of a story about an elephant, it's meaning becomes veiled. Since I have given you the solution to this one mystery out of many in this volume, I have ruined it for your own self discovery. Not to worry. There are plenty of other puzzles that can tease your mind into greater self-understanding. The elephant is US!
If you know how people think, including yourself, read this book. You will rethink your thinking! Shah has an amazing way of helping you understand things more fully, mixing teaching stories, relatively current news, and other examples that demonstrate the information. Beware... you may realize that many of us are not done growing.
If you need any proof that this issue is still alive and in need of contemplation, consider that Bjarne Stroustrup, credited with the creation and the development of the widely-used C++ programming language, often needs to mentions this story when asked to counter myths and simplifications about C++. He talks about it by the story's older name, which would only spoil the book for you if mentioned here and now. ( For those who need proof [...] )

The Dermis Probe is light hearted. The diamond comes from asking how can we do better than the people probing the dermis?
